The M2 has always been the purist's M car — small, snarly, and rear-wheel drive only. That changes for 2027. BMW just confirmed the M2 xDrive, the first all-wheel-drive version of its smallest M coupe ever, and it's arriving sooner than you'd think.

What Is the M2 xDrive?

The M2 xDrive uses the same twin-turbocharged 3.0L inline-6 as the standard M2, making 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. The catch: it's paired exclusively with an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission — no manual option on the AWD car.

How Much Quicker Is It?

Sending power to all four wheels pays off in a straight line.

• 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds (3.3 seconds with a 1-foot rollout), a full 0.3 seconds quicker than the RWD M2
• Top speed of 155 mph standard, or 177 mph with the optional M Driver's Package

How the AWD System Works

This isn't a full-time all-wheel-drive setup, it's tuned to keep the M2's rear-drive character front and center.

• Power defaults to the rear wheels in normal driving
• The front axle only engages through a transfer case and electronically controlled multi-plate clutch when the rear wheels start to slip
• An Active M rear differential still splits power side-to-side at the rear for that classic M handling feel

Price and Availability

The 2027 BMW M2 xDrive starts at $74,950, including the mandatory $1,350 destination fee. BMW says production gets underway in late summer 2026, with a new Borusan Turkish Blue color option available at launch. It's not yet confirmed whether the manual transmission or the higher-output M2 CS trim will carry over for 2027 on the RWD side.
