It was unveiled at CES 2026 in Las Vegas and BMW is the first automaker to integrate Alexa+ technology into a production vehicle. It runs on BMW Operating System X, the same platform that underpins the entire Neue Klasse lineup, and it's built into the BMW Panoramic iDrive interface as a core feature — not a bolt-on.

What Makes It Different from Past Voice Assistants

The old approach required you to memorize a specific set of commands. "Navigate to..." or "Call..." or "Turn up the heat." One word off and the system didn't know what you meant.

The new Intelligent Personal Assistant works differently. Because it's powered by a Large Language Model, it understands context, intent, and follow-up questions. You can ask it multiple things in a single sentence — covering both vehicle functions and general knowledge — and it handles all of it.

You say: "Hey BMW, it's getting hot in the back seat and I need to find somewhere to eat near the highway." It adjusts the rear climate zone and pulls up restaurants along your route. One request. Done.

You say: "BMW, what's the range on this battery and is there a charger before we hit the shore?" It tells you both — battery range in current conditions and nearby fast chargers on your path.

The Amazon Alexa+ Connection

The technological foundation is Amazon's Alexa Custom Assistant, with selected AI-based Alexa+ capabilities integrated directly into the vehicle software. The key word is "integrated" — this isn't a phone app mirrored onto a screen. It's built into the car's operating system and engineered for fast, accurate, context-aware responses while driving.

Linking your Amazon account unlocks additional capabilities: streaming music across services, retrieving news, accessing your personal preferences and routines. The assistant learns your patterns and gets more useful the more you use it.

Activation is simple: say "Hey BMW" or just "BMW" and it's listening.

Where It Lives: BMW Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X

The AI assistant isn't a standalone feature — it's woven into the iX3's broader interface. BMW Panoramic iDrive stretches a display across the entire dashboard, and the Intelligent Personal Assistant is its primary mode of interaction. You can still touch, but the system is designed so that voice handles most of what you'd otherwise reach for.

BMW Operating System X is designed to evolve. Updates arrive over the air, which means the assistant that ships with the iX3 will continue improving over time — getting faster, learning more, and expanding what it can do without a trip to the dealership.

When Does It Arrive — and What Comes Next?

The AI-powered BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is rolling out in the US in the second half of 2026, starting with the iX3. From there, BMW plans to expand the technology to additional models running BMW Operating System 9 and Operating System X through 2027.

By 2027, the technologies first introduced in the iX3 are slated to appear in 40 new models and model updates across the BMW lineup. The AI assistant experience you get in the iX3 today is the beginning of what every BMW will offer within the next few years.
