BMW's infotainment system has come a long way since the original iDrive launched over two decades ago, and the newest evolution is the biggest leap yet. Say hello to iDrive X and BMW Panoramic Vision — a completely reimagined way of interacting with your car that trades a single center screen for a display that stretches across your entire windshield.

What Is BMW Panoramic Vision?

Panoramic Vision is a head-up display unlike anything BMW has offered before. Instead of a small readout in your line of sight, it projects information A-pillar to A-pillar along the base of the windshield, so critical details like speed and navigation sit right in front of you while secondary info (weather, media, messages) spreads out toward the passenger side.

  • Fully customizable widgets you can place anywhere across the display
  • Upload your own photos as a personalized background for the central screen
  • Works alongside the redesigned multifunction steering wheel and an available 3D Head-Up Display

What Is iDrive X?

iDrive X is the operating concept built on top of Panoramic Vision, powered by BMW's new Operating System X. Think of it as the intelligence hub connecting the windshield display, the central touchscreen, and the steering wheel controls into one seamless system, all designed to keep your eyes closer to the road instead of down at a screen.

  • Cleaner, more intuitive menus than iDrive 8/8.5
  • Deeper personalization, from widget layout to display themes
  • Built to scale across BMW's full lineup, gas, hybrid, and electric alike

When Is It Coming?

BMW is rolling out iDrive X and Panoramic Vision across new models starting in late 2025, with a target of roughly 40 models featuring the tech by 2027. Here in the U.S., it debuts first on the all-new, Neue Klasse-based BMW iX3, with deliveries expected in fall 2026.

Why It's a Big Deal

This isn't just a bigger screen, it's a rethink of how driver and car communicate. By spreading information across the windshield instead of stacking it on one display, BMW is aiming to cut down on the time your eyes spend off the road while still giving you more control and personalization than ever before.

TL;DR: iDrive X and Panoramic Vision are BMW's next-generation infotainment system, projecting a customizable display across the entire windshield and powered by the new Operating System X. It debuts in the U.S. on the 2027 BMW iX3, arriving this fall.
